Students Speak Out

Students Speak Out: Minnesota

I'm curious about something that's been mentioned several times as a reason that students moved to ALCs. That's the dislike of drama in traditional schools. What exactly does this mean? What type of drama is taking place that make these schools uncomfortable or distasteful for you?

I am going to post this on the main pages as well.

Well for me I think it is because there is so much drama.
Like so and so likes this person, but they like that person, and that person is a S***.
Pretty the traditional schools are so big that everyone has problems with at lest someone.
and Then theres the kids starting it. Trying to get everyone to hate everyone.

I think cause ALC's are smaller and kids are more like "Drama is stupid."
They just don't start it or deal with it cause its immature.

thats just my opinon.

Ashley, why do ALC students think drama is stupid? Does it seem petty compared to what is going on in their own lives? Or does the smaller school environment where everybody knows everybody creates a different type of social standard for students to be more real? Or is it that students feel more comfortable just being who they are (rather than trying to live up to their peer group) so that there's less "need" for drama?

Or are you saying that ALC students tend to act more maturely (which is perhaps why they didn't fit into the traditional school in the first place)?

Sorry, I'm not trying to be difficult with all of these questions, I just really want to understand because I think you've hit on something important about ALCs.

well i know kids in my LA most arnt really mature. And yeah there is a more "everyone knows everyone" thing going around. And I think the smaller environment is one big thing to that. Cause theres is less students so everyone knows who it is if someone whats to start something. And most the kids in my LA are probably there cause they dont want to deal with so much peoples crap. In my school there is no social standard and thats one key thing. No kid likes to be told there lower then someone else. So that makes kids wanna live up to something. Make them seem better then the person who lowered them. And if you completely eliminate that then there is no problem.

thats kinda my perspective.

Ashley, the other SSO group is looking at the question of bullying in schools, and one of the things they have focused on is respect in schools. i think that's kind of what you're saying--that students and teachers all have respect for each other in ALCs. I'm wondering, is there ever bullying in your LA?
