Students Speak Out: Minnesota

Brett

Haha Too bad you fail! Were is the cash anyway? outrageous expectations?

My best friend was shocked when she arrived at High school. She is expected to not ever miss a day of school. Not too bad, until you hear the rest.

If she does miss a day, too bad she has no way to make it up, the student to teacher ratio is so high, they can not give her make up work (besides the fact that it is verbal note taking lessons so making it up would be hard anyway) She then found out if you miss 8 days of school Haha to bad!!!! You fail the class!!!! I looked at her in shock like WHAT?!? What would happen if students have a family issue or it is an excused absence? You are pretty much out of luck. There is not too much you can do about it, and there is no extra credit. I told her that the system was crazy expecting that out of students. I understand wanting kids to come and learn to be responsible about attending, but at least my schools have had a way if I go to the teachers I can get the work I missed the next day, but not at her high school. There is not enough money for teachers to be able to keep trap of one student’s work that they missed anyway, since there’s so many students per teacher.
Thoughts . . .? I know Annie was talking about expectations out of students in her recent forums, could the reasons so many of the students fail, or the graduation rate is so low because we have some outrageous expectations?

There is so much great thought out there. I only wish I had the time to read it all and at the same time, take action.

Don't worry, according to Sturgeon's Law (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sturgeon's_law) 90% of everything is crud anyway. :-) The trick is finding the other 10%.

Julie, you say you are a recycler of ideas that have already been defined by greater minds than yours....I wonder if you didn't already have the ideas in your own great mind and were only validated by the minds that spoke out before you.

I have found that this is the case many times with great reads...I haven't gotten my ideas from others so much as I seek out like minds to help remind me that my thoughts are not that "out there" and for confirmation, as well.

When I hear the students on this forum I know that they haven't had the time yet to connect with all the great minds of the past, yet they have some very powerful thoughts that may have been inspired by friends and family but I have a feeling for the most part come from within. From that place that calls us to question and refine our society.

BTW, "taking action" comes in many forms. Some action can be seen by many, other action ...not so much. Isn't your presence here a form of action ? Isn't the work that you do a form of action?

Not only to rules, regulations, and expectations like this put extreme stress on the student, they also do not help out the family. At my school I know I have the assurance that if I feel like crap one or more days a week, I don't have to go to school. Our teachers give absent students three full days to make up work before it becomes late, and this gives sick students the peace of mind that they can be just that: sick! It was really a comfort for me last year during the holiday break because my grandpa was in the hospital, where he later died. Although I didn't have to miss any extra school during that time (the school had just added another week to their break) I did know that if I needed to stay for the funeral or wanted to spend some extra time at the hospital, I could. The only problem I have ever run into with my school is that we have a fifteen day limit. I went on vacation once last year and was gone for fourteen days, which was the absolute limit before expaltion. I really feel for your friend, and I hope that rules like these will begin to change, not only for the students, but for the overall school. I imagine that many students who feel sick choose not to stay home because they can't afford to miss. There have got to be a lot of flu viruses swarming around!
