Students Speak Out: Minnesota

What makes a great teacher? Do the same things make a great student?

Let's face it. Without good teachers we would be getting no where in education. But that made me wonder, what sets one teacher apart from another? In my experience it's been that my favorite teachers have had a deep passion for the subject they're teaching, and a respect for the students they are teaching. Do these things, then, also make a "good" student rather than a "bad" student? What do you think???

I have a question for you, Holly!

Do you think that you (or anyone else you know) can be a "good" student in one class and a "bad" student in another? What makes the difference? Or is someone just "good" or "bad" in everything?

I really don't know how to describe a good student or a bad student. Behavior? Passion? A+ all down the line? For me, science and language arts are my best subjects, and they are also the ones I enjoy the most. Math is harder, and it's not my favorite. I think that being a good student can stem from inspirement, or can just be there. It's a difficult question because I don't like to label people. Honestly, I really don't know the answer, if there even is a right or wrong.

Holly, I absolutely love your question...and yours too Victoria? Funny, but I was always a good student. But thinking about when I was the best student, was always when I had a great teacher.

You've hit on something really important here Holly, and I hope we can explore it more. Often adults try to frame things in opposition to one another (e.g., teachers vs. students), but you are suggesting that we're all in this together and need to develop the SAME attitudes and skills.

I agree with Holly, if you are good at a subject (enjoy it too?) there is a good chance I will be a better student and more motivated in that classroom. If I am turned off to all topics, and just get shut down early on, it would be really hard for me to want to perform well and I would always doubt myself. Thats one reason I feel it is so important for me to help out with literacy at an early age at Urban Academy (2nd and 3rd graders), because it gives them an extra boost so they can be good at reading. Find interest in topics, and not struggle so they can be good students. School does not ask that much of you, and if do as your told it is pretty simple to do well in class right? It can be more difficult if you struggle at math for instance, to be a good student. Also if you do not have a teacher whose style, method, and abilities does not match your learning very well on top of that, things can get worse. Another way options of schools is a good thing to have.
